What is one piece of interviewing advice that you always hear? To ask good questions! I even mention it in this Quick Interviewing Checklist. But what does that even mean? Let's dig into this a little deeper and dissect what someone means when they advise to ask good questions. Keep reading for how to ask good questions during an interview.

What Are Good Questions to Ask During an Interview

Asking a good question during an interview means showing that you have done your homework and understand the role. In other words, don't ask surface level questions. And especially don't ask questions that could be answered with a simple Google search.

If interviewing for an MSL or Medical Affairs role, not researching the company's products is a good example. You should have a good understanding of their product and TA.

How To Ask Good Questions During An Interview

It's ok to do a Google search on good interview questions to help you prepare questions for your interview. Just make sure your final list of questions isn't too generic and that the answers aren't publicly available. Here is a way to take this a step further.

Hone in on the job description and look at the top responsibilities. Here is an example from a recent MSL listing.

It says the primary role is to develop and maintain relationships. Think of questions that relate to this aspect of the job and highlight that you understand this is important for your success in the role:

"I know my primary responsibility will be to develop and maintain relationships with the thought leaders and HCPs in my territory. How will I be expected to manage my territory?"

Don't ask if you will have to meet and engage with HCPs.

Conclusions

When you ask surface level questions it shows that you haven't done your homework. This leaves a bad impression and can indicate that you aren't interested or serious about the job. Use the job description to help shape your questions. Pick out areas that are particularly interesting to you and ask about expectations to do that aspect of the role successfully.
