I miss the old days of interviewing

"I Miss the Old Days of Interviewing..."

interviewing Dec 20, 2024

By Sarah Snyder, PharmD

A Medical Science Liaison candidate recently confided, “I miss the old days of interviewing in person. I’m just better that way. I can connect more easily.”

I understood. In-person interviews had a certain simplicity and immediacy. Sitting face-to-face, shaking hands, and making an impression without technical barriers. I even agreed with them.

But here’s the thing: that’s not how hiring works in the pharma industry anymore.

The interview process in Medical Affairs has fundamentally changed, and holding on to the past can put you at a disadvantage.

If you want to succeed in 2025, it’s not about resisting these changes. It’s about adapting to them. The good news? You don’t have to do it alone.  Let’s look at the five major shifts in the interview landscape and how you can succeed in this new reality.

“I Miss the Old Days of Interviewing…” (And Why That Mindset Could Hold You Back)

1. Virtual Interviews Are the New Norm

Today, over 90% of Medical Affairs interviews are conducted virtually, and that number isn’t shrinking. Saying, “I’m better in person” is no longer an option. To stand out, you need to excel in virtual interactions.

To help candidates navigate this, we’ve developed a Virtual Presentations Playbook that’s full of actionable tips for making a lasting impression, even from behind a screen.

2. Interviews Involve More People and More Steps

Hiring committees have grown, and processes are longer. You’ll need to prepare for multiple rounds and stakeholders.

  • Research deeply. Know who you’ll be meeting and tailor your approach to their roles. Keep track of everyone with our free Interview Tracking Spreadsheet.
  • Stay consistent. Each interviewer should walk away with the same impression of your expertise and fit.
  • Pace yourself. Don’t burn out before the final round—this is a marathon, not a sprint.

3. Flexibility is Non-Negotiable

Hiring timelines have become tighter and less predictable, and employers expect candidates to adapt.

  • Be available. Interviews might be scheduled with short notice or outside traditional hours.
  • Switch gears quickly. Develop the ability to step into “interview mode” seamlessly, even when balancing other responsibilities.

4. It’s a Competitive Market

The Medical Affairs job market is more competitive than ever. Waiting until you feel “ready” to make a move can set you back.

If you’re looking to break into an MSL role, programs like The Aspire MSL Program can help you gain the tools, skills, and confidence to secure your first position.

5. Your Personal Brand Is Non-Negotiable

Hiring managers (learn more about what they want here) will Google you, check your LinkedIn, and evaluate your online presence. It’s not a question of if, but when.

  • Polish your profile. Showcase your expertise and accomplishments on LinkedIn.
  • Engage thoughtfully. Share insights, comment on industry topics, and position yourself as a leader.
  • Control your narrative. Make sure your online presence reflects the professional you want to be.

If you’re unsure where to begin, our LinkedIn Lab can help you craft a profile that tells your story, builds credibility, attracts the right opportunities, and finds you jobs while you sleep.

Moving Forward with Confidence

It’s okay to miss the old ways. I do, too. But wishing for the past won’t help you land your dream role.

Success in 2025 requires adapting to these changes, embracing new challenges, and equipping yourself with the skills and tools to shine in this modern landscape.

2025 can be the year you secure the role or promotion you’ve been working toward. If you’re ready to stop looking back and start moving forward, there’s no limit to what you can achieve. Let’s make it happen!
